Guide to buy used car parts

Buying Used Car Parts Checklist

Essential tips to help you buy high-quality second-hand car parts for your vehicle.

There are many reasons why you would be on the lookout for good second hands car parts.

Maybe you are collecting classic cars and need parts to restore or even upgrade them.

Maybe you want to extend the life of your current car and don’t want to overspend on a brand new part.

We live in a time where we need our vehicles as much as we need to stay hydrated, especially in Perth where everything is so sprawled out.

We need our cars to drop the kids off at school each morning and get to work on time. To go on long family road trips on the weekends. To tackle some of WA’s most hectic off-road tracks. To be able to get from point A to B without a worry.

It’s safe to say, we rely quite heavily on our cars to get through our busy days, I know I do.

This is why it’s so important, that if you’re in the market for used car parts, to ensure you purchase high-quality second hand parts that have been sourced and tested by certified professionals.

However, if you’re not used to shopping for used car parts, it can be an overwhelming experience and you might end up with the wrong part. To help make sure you end up with the right part, save time and money, we’ve created a used spare parts checklist.

1- Buy from a trusted source

These days, thanks to the internet, it is extremely easy to find used car parts, whether it’s from your local wrecker, eBay, Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. However, there are plenty of counterfeits on the market, so you need to make sure you are purchasing parts from a credible supplier. Opt for local wreckers with qualified mechanics who refurbish, put parts through safety tests and offer a guarantee.

2- Know what you need

Make sure you have your vehicle’s make, model and year ready to go. This will help you get the right part for your vehicle. If you’re unsure of what part you need, you can always speak to a professional.

3- Have your VIN number ready

When it comes to purchasing any used part for your vehicle, it’s a good idea to have the VIN number ready to quote to the seller.

Not all parts are compatible with all car makes and models, so to ensure you end up with the right part for your car, find out what your VIN number is and have it ready for the seller.

4- Always ask for warranties

Although you’re purchasing used auto parts, all reputable sellers should offer a warranty or at least have the option to purchase one. Always read the fine print and understand what is included within the warranty

5- Ask if there is a return policy

Before purchasing any second hand parts, always make sure to read store policies clearly and ask about the return policy. Most reputable sellers will offer a return policy for any exchanges or change in circumstances.

6- Stick to local stores

Compared to dealerships or large franchises, local stores are where you will usually find the best prices on used car parts. Not only will you save heaps of money, most sellers will be able to source and supply to your door or your mechanic in a shorter amount of time.

7- When in doubt, bring an expert

If you’re not too familiar with car auto parts, bring a trusted mechanic along with you. If you don’t have access to one, you can always contact the professionals.

If it is a windscreen or window you need replacing, call or send us an email and we will swiftly get back to you.
